*Do you know what MSS (Maximum Segment Size) is?

Suggested page: MSS (Maximum Segment Size): What It Is and How It Works

MSS (Maximum Segment Size) is the maximum amount of application data, or TCP payload, that a device can receive in a single TCP segment. It does not include the IP or TCP headers.

MSS is exchanged when a TCP connection is established. Each endpoint can advertise its preferred MSS in the SYN or SYN-ACK packet, helping the other side determine an appropriate segment size.

A few important points about MSS:

  • MSS and MTU are different. MTU defines the maximum size of the entire IP packet, while MSS refers only to TCP data.
  • With a standard Ethernet MTU of 1500 bytes, a typical IPv4 MSS is 1460 bytes.
  • An MSS that is too large can cause packet loss, retransmissions, slow transfers, or connection failures.
  • VPNs and tunnels can reduce the available packet size because they add extra headers.
  • MSS clamping can reduce the advertised MSS so TCP segments fit properly through these networks.

MSS can also affect DNS when DNS communication uses TCP.
